7 Design Trends for 2017

If you’re building your home from the ground up, you have choices that aren’t available to just everyone. If you’re renovating or adding on, you can make big changes as well. Before choosing your layout, paint and furniture, find out what’s fresh for this year.

You’ll find ideas that go with your style for a home, provide comfort for your family and maximize future resale value after reviewing the latest design trends. Here’s what’s new for 2017.

Space to gather – As we work longer, more hectic days we want time at home to provide opportunities for face-to-face conversation. Homeowners want open-concept floor plans that allow for 100 percent usable space. Kitchen, dining area, and living room should flow together seamlessly and invite people to stop and unwind.

Lighter colors – Until recently new homes had dark hand-scraped wood floors and cabinets so brown they were almost black. This year’s homes feature lighter wood and stone.

White remains a top color choice. While the last few years featured a lot of gray, this year designers prefer taupe for their choice of neutral. Sherwin-Williams named “Poised Taupe” as its 2017 Color of the Year. Pantone’s “Greenery” is popping up everywhere in design and fashion and was named the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year.

Playful homes – Butterflies are a recurring motif indicating a lighthearted approach to relaxation. Homeowners are building homes that have space for play. If you golf, add an outdoor putting green. Plant a whimsical garden to give you a place to unwind.

Innovations in the kitchen – For a long time, granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances have been the standard. Homeowners are getting tired of seeing the same things over and over. They want something unique. They’re choosing appliances that come in bright colors. Marble provides countertops with a clean, traditional look. Cabinets that feature lighter wood or bold colors.

Smart houses – Make your house safer, more energy efficient, and more convenient by installing smart devices. Install smart locks to keep your home safe and you never have to worry about your child losing his or her key. Add a video doorbell so you can see who is visiting before you answer the door.

Set your lights to lighten gradually to wake you up in the morning and automatically shut off at night. Control your thermostat from work so you come home to a house that’s the perfect temperature.

Eco-friendly design – Install energy star appliances to cut your heating bill and protect the environment. Double-pane energy-efficient windows insulate your home. Use building materials from sustainable forests to protect those forests for generations to come. Use blown-in insulation to dramatically improve energy efficiency and increase fire resistance.

Satellite Controlled Sprinklers – Satellite enabled sprinkler systems can monitor weather and only water your yard when needed. You’ll conserve water, have healthier grass and pay a lower utility bill.
